here are a few reasons..
1. he was in a fight
2. he is old
3. he has a cancerous sore
4. he was bit by something

Is it a boy? Is the bald spot on both sides toward his hips? If so they are scent glands.

can be a vitamin deficiency which u fix by getting liquid vitamins for hamsters for his water from the petstore or grocer. could be mites, a fight, old age, allergic reaction to pine or cedar bedding--which should be replaced with aspen or carefresh. need more info to know for sure what u should do.

He could have some sort of disease or maybe he's just rubbing that spot on something.
