English only has one word for love which covers so much.
I'm sure in some way, he loves you. However, does he love you to full fill your expectations? If he does not, that doesn't make him bad (or a jerk) --- simply not meeting your expectations.
So, you have come to a 'Fork' in the relationship road. Do you want to continue holding this man to expectations which will lead him to failure, or do you want to be kind, and just walk away to find a man who is willing to stand up to higher expectations? Or worse, if you lower your expectations, then you will be miserable and make EVERYONE around you miserable too.
Remember:
"Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Love is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other peoples sins, but delights in the truth. It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes."

Trust your instincts. His actions are probably speaking louder than his words, so to speak. As a man, I know how easy it is to say "I love you". And, sometimes, even when two people love each other, they still might not be right for each other.
You are still young. Play the field. Enjoy life. The more people you date, the better feel you will have for what feels right in a relationship. Also, you will have a better sense of when it is worth the effort to try to make a relationship work.

if he doesn't love you, he doesn't and you can't change it. if he does love you, there is no way to "make him prove it". when someone really loves you, you can feel it in your heart. you don't have "what if questions" like the ones you are proposing. it is hard to explain, but you just know. most guys aren't going to tell you they do if they don't though (and i don't mean using it as just a way to get in your pants... lol... i am assuming you are past all the early relationship stuff).
if you are having this many questions about whether he does or not, than you need to find a new boyfriend. either that or you are the one who is not sure if you love him. gl

Your heart would have been able to tell whether he was telling the truth. Perhaps you had a feeling he was being insincere which is why you ended it...Remember, actions speak louder than words--what has he done to show you that he truly loves you?

If your that confused I suggest taking time for yourself to put things into perspective. Maybe take 2 weeks or so and see how you feel. After the two weeks you might realize that you can be happy without him or you truely want him

Love does not exist. Love is simply a puppet emotion created by the human mind when you think the person gives half a **** about you.

If you know for a fact that he doesn't truly love you then you need to find someone that will, because there is no use being in that relationship. If he finds someone that he truly loves then he's going to leave you and there's no use putting yourself through that hearache.

Did he give you a reason to think he didn't love you? If it was just your insecurity (no offense) telling you that, then that is what you need to work on or you will always doubt the person you are with, no matter who it is.

If he truly loves you, you'll know he is telling the truth. You can feel it and you will be able to see it. If he isn't in love with you just know you can't love enough for both of you.
