Since the function of both is duplicated by many other things, I can't see a clear winner. However, if I were lost in the wilderness or the desert, I could probably find more uses for the pan than the marker.

The Stainless Steel pan As You can Cook Food in it and if your starving, a permanent marker wont keep you going for long.

On the straight I'd go for the pen but if it's an oval track it would have to be the pan.
Those pens are useless on bends, you know.
They run "write" out of their lanes
