Actually, DC has done more "resets" than Marvel
The crisis on Infinite Earths, the Infinite Crisis etc- those were attempts to reset the timeline and retroactively change the history in order to clean up continuity problems and make things more believable. So basically as it stands now- lots of stuff that happened before the Crisis NEVER happened unless it happens to match the post-crisis merged history. So Superman was never able to run faster than light or move planets, as he was shown doing in 70's comics. Officially his power levels have always been around what we see today. Awesome, but not silly and violating all the rules of physics.
Marvel gave this a shot with the 1602 limited series- what if all the heroes had been thrown back in time and existed back then in the society of the time? It was pretty cool.
The Secret Wars were interesting in that many changes occured for heroes (Like Spidey's black costume) but no history was undone as a result.
The Ultimates is more of an alternate universe, an edgier one with more interesting, closer to real-life characters. It works pretty well, I think.
With the recent Identity Crisis limited series, DC tried taking the dark/grim storyline to an extreme, and well... I guess they needed to reset everything with the Infinite Crisis soon afterwards. So I don't think DC needs to try duplicating the Ultimate universe.
They already did this successfully, but by dealing with future timelines, rather than the present. The Dark Knight Returns and Kingdom Come were both completely new, fresh conceptions of the DC universe- a glimpse at the future.
The current JUSTICE series by Alex Ross takes place in the present. It's up to issue #6 and man, it's excellent...

Actually the Ultimate relaunch is basically a rehash of what DC did in the late 50's and early 60's when they started the silver age with new versions of classic characters.
DC once again relaunched it's titles in the 80's with the mega popular crossover (the first big maxiseries crossover at that) called Crisis of Infinite Earths. The origins of all the heroes have undergone several changes over the years (Like Man of Steel or Batman:Year One).
So really, the Ultimate Universe is just another evolution of comic book heroes and nothing new under the sun.

I was just reading some history of GreenLantern in Wickapedia and it seem the story lines from the Silver age are the most successfull. They recently brought back Hal Jordan as a normal GL again and it is hugely successfull. I would say no to your question as it applies to DC. Here is the artical...
DC Comics subsequently began a new Green Lantern starting with issue #1 (July 2005), with Hal Jordan once again the main character. Trying to rebuild his life, Hal Jordan has moved to the nearly deserted Coast City, which is slowly being reconstructed. He has been reinstated as a Captain in the United States Air Force, and works in the Test Pilot Program at Edwards Air Force Base. Issue #1 was #1 on the monthly sales charts, and the monthly series has consistently landed at the top of the monthly comics sales charts.

I answered your Superman question before I saw this one, but I will add to what I said. Yes, I think it would be great if DC were to update and modernize their universe. I don't want it to be an "Ultimates" version wherein some of the Superheroes are mean-spirited and foul-mouthed, etc., but an update where the heroes have better origins, streamlined and believable powers, better and modern costumes. I would really be open to this, and am glad you asked this question! It is something I have been pondering for awhile, as well.

DC did something like that in 80's it was called Crisis On Infinite Earths I think. It was a huge failure. DC had so many universes with same characters they tried to merge all of them so many died some lived but were changed it failed. It was DC's response to the huge Marvel success Secret Wars

ok right here is the low down, take a seat back and prepare for a narrative! DC has been owned by ability of Warner Brothers for a very long term. this means that the artists have not got complete administration over their works, all of it must be authorized by ability of WB. WB is a huge employer that looks at numbers and not the artwork. They observed that Batman (1989) became an excellent blockbuster. It became dark and gritty. They began making all their content cloth dark, extremely of being an open artwork it became approximately numbers and this has brought about alot of their artwork to be bland. a number of that's been wonderful (darkest nighttime rocked!) even nonetheless that's all colors of gray and purple. ask your self became owned by ability of the artists arising the works till Disney offered them some years back. This has allowed them to locate their artwork and be fairly inventive. alongside with that additionally they have desperate to make the continuities of each of their sequence to electrify the others. the extensive bypass overs have been enormous for the previous 10 years or so and has meant that their has been spectacular thoughts and activities. as far because of the fact the flicks bypass. Superman: they might desire to have him combat somebody different that Lex Luther. you don't get an excellent superhero bout in case you have the main powerful being combat a classic guy who's prosperous and smart. Batman: Nuff reported green Lantern: It became an excellent journey and became very ambitious. regrettably it became gimicky and that they did no longer decide to veer far off from that. This meant that mutually because it began with a inventive theory it additionally prevented them from utilising extra inventive ideas and likewise shown strategies for making a solid action picture. i'm relating the over use of CGI. ask your self has been open to diverse ideas of their video clips. regardless of if that's been X-adult males, Spiderman, or any of the different titles, they have all been their very own video clips. each and each shot diverse and not following formula. yet this has additionally meant they have made some undesirable video clips too i.e. magnificent 4, X-adult males final stand, wolverine, the latest Punisher action picture, and the 2002 hulk... properly in any case i'm hoping this facilitates!
