I know how you feel!

Wanna hear a cute story? (it's long, but I think you'll appreciate it.)

The year was 1988, Star Trek: The Next Generation had premiered almost a year before. My friend who "made" me watch the premiere with him really liked the show. I think I fell asleep about 1/2 way through the movie. (*yawn*) Don't get me wrong, I has always liked science fiction, but it just wasn't as good as the original. (Or was it?) I had watched a few over the past year, but never really got into them. It was the summer after our senior year of high school. My friend was leaving for a six year stint in the Navy and wanted to know if I would tape a few episodes for him so he could watch them when he was home on leave. I thought, what the heck? So I taped a few, stopping the VCR for commericals of course. Our reception sucked on the only UHF station that we could receive the show on. I felt bad, because I knew my friend would come home to these horrible, bad reception tapes. I begged my parents to let me get cable. I had to promise to pay for it. Finally, they agreed.

Then I taped a few more. You know what? This show isn't bad... I REALLY got into it. I was always there every time a new episode aired. Occassionally the local station would not show one to broadcast the NBA game. Those were not good nights for me! It was like drugs. An addiction! I remember the Summer of 1990 after the Best of Both worlds cliff hanger. Our first summer long cliff hanger. It drove me nuts. Were they going to kill off Picard like they did Lt. Yar in the first season? I taped every one from then on, catching the first run shows on re-runs. The series ending, and so did my obsession, in the spring of 1994.

I still have the tapes. Every one of them. Every episode that ever aired. Commericals cut. I loved that show.

For all of those naysayers who like to say stuff like "get a life" and "what a loser"... hey! Some of the coolest stuff I've ever seen was on that show. I remember one show that first year ("Up the Long Ladder", I think) talked about a "fire suppression system" and thought what a cool concept! In the seven years the show aired, I went to one, and only one convention. I did "have a life" outside of Star Trek. I had a full time job, ran fire and rescue on my off hours, volunteered at my church, met my wife, got married, had kids. Star trek never dominated my life except for 1 hour a week when that new episode aired. Everyone has an obsession or two at some point in thier life. Some people have it all thier life (*cough*nascar*cough*). But as long as you don't let it dominate your life, there's nothing wrong with it. (*cough*nascar*cough*)

FYI - My friend and I had some great all night trek-marathons on some of the leaves that he had.

Glad to hear there are still people who love the show!

Enjoy it. If you ever want to chat about it, drop me an email.

P.S. Today, I design "fire suppression systems" for a living. Thanks Star Trek.

I loved watching it when I was a kid! My brother was a Trekkie and got me into it :) TNG is still my fave out of all the Star Trek shows, even though I only watch it every once in a while now.

Just a side note, last fall I studied abroad in London and Patrick Stewart did a one-man show of "A Christmas Carol." I got to meet him and get his autograph afterwards!!! He's such a brilliant and versatile actor. When I saw him I wanted to say "Captain Picard!" but I'm sure he gets that a lot :)

I love Star Trek, but Star Wars is my fav. I refused to see the 1st Star Trek movie, because I was so loyal to Star Wars, but I came around. I like all of the S.T. Series. I've seen 98% of them.I'm trying to find the ones I have not seen.

Obviously you missed the the movies, the documentaries, the conventions, and so forth, and so on. Lots of people love that series. Obsession though is a bad thing. Any time you feel this way watch the movies Galaxy quest and Free Enterprise to remind you that you are going a bit too far.

I was when it first came out as with all the other Star Trek series and movies. I still watch reruns of those shows quite often.

I was obsessed with it back in the late 90s, I think. I still stop and watch it whenever I catch it on G4 now.
