I am going to take an airport shuttle bus from the Johanesburg international airport for the center of Pretoria. I wander if it is safe.

And I heard the shuttle bus offered a service of taking us to where we stay in Pretoria. Is it true and is it also possible to ask to go to the coach staion in the city instead of going to the hotel?

If you have an idea, please let me know.

Yes to take the shuttle bus should be safe. You would have to ask the particular shuttle driver if they do stop at the bus station in central Pretoria (actually it is not smack in the middle of the city but walking distance from the CBD). When you get to Jhb international airport there is a enquiries desk in the middle of the terminal, it is always manned, so please go and ask for assistance and guidance there if you have any queries. DO NOT go off with some cheap option of a ride, always stick with real taxis or a real shuttle. The information desk would be able to give you more info, also on shuttles.
I have had visitors take the shuttle and I have never heard any complaints.

Have a safe trip

Dude, the shuttle bus picks you up at the airport and you go straight onto the motorway and straight through to pretoria. It's safe, you don't even go through or near joburg central which is a sh@t hole. The airport is actually in Boksburg which is a town outside of Joburg itself.

All I'd say is - don't go into JHB central, be sensible and follow your instincts. Stay in public shopping areas and tourist areas. Forget the tours around Soweto and all that 'boll@@s' - that's where you'll pick up trouble

Rock on (PS I lived in Joeys for 26 years, until 2001)

The transport shuttle should be safe enough option at the airport to Pretoria airport. It is dangerous to walk around with your bagage though, so i would make sure that you arrive where you need to be.

Not sure why you are going to the coach station, hope you take a reliable bus service...

Always take a shuttle recommended by a travel agent. Let them drop you off at a Hotel as it is not safe at the coach stations in Pretoria or Johannesburg. Criminals wait for foreigners to arrive by shuttles in these 2 cities. Taking the wrong shuttle will let you end up at a guesthouse in Soweto (JHB).

the center of Pretoria is much more dangerous than the shuttle bus. (unless the driver is TOTALLY drunk not moderately drunk)
my advise to you: they are building now the gauteng high speed train from the int' airport to Pretoria. you can wait for the compilation around 2009.
call Avis. they have VIP door to door service

As long as you stick to official transport you will be OK. But that answer from Benks is completely untrue. You have 12 times more chance of being murdered in SA than you do in the States. People shouldn't make untrue statements and put you in danger. SA is violent and you need to be streetwise so watch your step while you are there and try not to travel alone or look like a tourist.

ok as you are coming from the uk surely the hotel that you are staying in offers a shuttle service from hotel to airport and back again....if they do you probably be best doing that.....also stay away from the centre of jo'burg, its not safe even if you are a bit street-smart.....public transport in south africa is non-existant either you need to hire a car, get a taxi (which cost lots of Rands) or you need to get someone to shuttle you around.

i was in south africa last year october and we drove through the middle of jo'burg and i promise you that even though i am a south african and i had lived in south africa for 26 years.... i crapped myself driving through jo'burg. (i have been in uk for 4 years now)

DON'T LOOK LIKE A TOURIST....DONT'T HAVE YOUR CARDS, CASH, VALUABLES ON SHOW....DON'T WEAR EXPENSIVE JEWELLARY.....KEEP ALL YOUR STUFF CLOSE TO YOU....TAKE SUNSCREEN AND A HAT! BASICALLY FOLLOW ALL THE BASIC GUIDELINES GIVEN BY TOURIST OPERATORS WHEN YOU TRAVEL.

GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A GOOD TIME.....

p.s bring us back some proper biltong!!!

Yes it is safe, there is nothing wrong with Joburg, did you know that the highest crime rate is in the USA, not SA?
