avg free from grisoft is good. also try Spybot Search and Destroy, they find most things and also provide a guard/immunization feature that alerts you of changes and viruses. I've had them both running for years, and while a few virus and trojans occasionally slip through, I haven't had to do anything as drastic as reformat a drive for many years. hopefully, you are running XP with the XP firewall on (no exceptions) and have all the security updates.

between the XP firewall, AVG anti-virus, and Spybot S&D, you should not have any major problems. Windows XP of course is not free, but if you're still running 2000 or 95/98, then you're probably just asking for it. Sounds like you are anyway with your "underground" downloads. Be more careful/knowledgable about what you're doing. Hackers/malware can find their way around just about anything, if you help them by downloading carelessly.

I have McAfee Internet Security Suite and put it on automatic updates. I have used the virus scan for the whole computer and never have found one virus in 8 months, so it must be working. Try looking for PC World magazine; they just had an article rating these services.
McAfee and Norton were rated the highest. When you download programs from underground sites, you are just asking for trouble, as some of those programs actually insert a virus or a trojan into your computer. Also keep your computer up to date with the
microsoftwindowsupdates. Make sure your firewall is always turned on. Also, you can look up KimKommando.com. She has free tips, daily newsletters, and a weekend radio show. Just sign up for free. If I were you, I'd try some of the programs she recommends and dump the
underground stuff immediately. You can also
do a system restore to a period when you did not have problems. See start, run programs,
accessories, system tools, system restore.
Be sure to save all important files first. E-mails, etc., are not affected by a restore program. If you're not sure what to do, do nothing and go to the library and get a book on how windows xp works. Good luck!

No anti virus and firewall program screens all bad code. The virus, trojan or what have you may be too new for them to recognisethe signatures. Set up a quaranteen computers or 2 computers and downloa to the front line quaranteen computer. . Wait 10 days and if there's no problem transfer the most useful code to the primary computer. The secondary computers are quaranteen machines. You may even have a first quaranteen machine and transfer its important data to a second quaranteen machine and then transfer to the primary machine a full month after your primary download. By that time almost all 10 or 30 day old, malware code will be known by the antivirus service providers, and can be cleaned out or sanitised.
Extra quaranteen computers do not have to be sophisticated, except for high data throughput and large storage capacity.
Use the most user friendly data transfer program, available on the market, to ease all your data jockying. (& let us know what program that is.
The perfect malware screen does not exist. This system is used by a lot of security organisations that you would readily recognise were their names divulged.
With your high rate of downloading, you should be updating all your virus, adware etc. programs, 3-4 times a day. Do not wait for their "regular" downloads, which are slow to arrive and sometimes do noty arrive at all. You shoul have at least 3 or 4 adware programs. Two that are free are www.spybot.com and ad www.adaware.com. Get a few more none of them catch all the signatures.

First thing that u have to do is stop downloading software which comes for free.Always the software that comes for free contain some malicious code which harms our PC.
Second ... Install a antivirus software (anything that u have) and make sure that its going to start as soon as ur pc boots up.
Third ... Never login with any administrative account. Normally administrator has full control of the PC so when u log in with that account viruses can take control of ur PC..So use some account which has no permissions to install / unnistall / change files in system folders.
Fourth ... Make use of system retore option so that when u find something happening u can quickly goback and be happy.
Fifth .. Run full scan of hard disk every 24 hrs.
Sixth .. Always upgrade the antivirus software..
THIS WILL HELP A LOT
Thanks

Your problem is not that the software doesnt work, it is that you do not update it enough or it is not set up to update frequently enough for your type of user. Kaspersky Antivirus 2006 and McAfee VirusScan 2006 tend to update their systems the most frequently with atomtaic or user initiated updates. No matter how good your antivirus software is, they still depend on a library of known threats, some softwares like can detect unknown threats but this is usually not a valuable or relaible tool in thwarting online attackers. The best thing you can do is be mindful of where you visit and what you download. I would also recommend popblcker and spyware blocker software those can also be used to upload or redirect you to sites which automatically begin downloads of malicious software.

Anti-virus and firewall creators are in jobs that are reactive. Someone writes a virus today, spreads it, the manufactures get a hold of them, time goes by writing countermeasures, and then puts out new definitions. By that process alone there will always be viruses and hackers one step ahead.

AVG is a good anti virus program and its free to download from
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01.. i use it at work and at home. as with all antiv virus program make sure you keep it updated. As far as a firewall. the best firewall is router. Such as linksys, netgear, dlink. if you have windows xp. you can turn on the xp firewall by going to. start, control panel, network connections,(may need to click on network connections again), local area connection, properties, advanced, then either check the box for internet connection firewall or click settings to turn firewall on.

Any of the A.V. programs you mentioned will work, but you also need: spybot search & destroy V.1.4, lavasoft adaware, windows firewall will work, but there are other firewalls that are more robust. You can find all these at www.downloads.com Also scan programs to find "piggyback" worms, trojans, etc.,especially if from source (site) you do not know or trust. (black ice firewall should be robust enough.) also free.

You let the file in. When you download a file and the blocker says do you want to download it and you say yes then you let the virus in. Just cause it says game.exe doesn't mean its not. game.exe is added virus code. Also try cyber halk for zero day viruses.
