Are you referring to your period -- the number of days it should last, or the cycle, which is the time from one period to the next? Either way, there's really no definite answer because every woman's cycle is different. The average days of flow can be anywhere from three to six, with the heaviest flow usually on the second day. An average menstrual cycle is 28 to 30 days apart, with some women having shorter (21-day cycles) and some having longer (32-day cycles). It really takes about a year before your periods settle down to a normal routine. It takes about that long for them to become established. But I'm just giving you average numbers. Once they become fairly predictable, you can mark them on your calendar, which is helpful when you want to schedule certain events like vacations, parties, dates or swimming, and want to be and feel at your best.

Your periods should not prevent you from doing the things you enjoy, but most girls feel more comfortable at certain times if they're not having their periods during those times.. Also, it is common during the first year to skip a period or two. Don't let this alarm you. It's just your body's way of trying to adjust to the new changes. Eventually your periods will become regular. Good luck, and enjoy being a girl!
