You might try Memoir of a Geisha or The Tale of Genji or Musashi, Eiji Yoshikawa's swashbuckling samurai novel.

You may enjoy the Tales of the Otori trilogy by Lian Hearn. It's a fantasy series, but set in historical Japan.
