If it is entering random letters, then either the keyboard has gone bad or the num lock key is turned on (that switches the typeboard so that some of the keys type numbers instead of letters).

If pressing the num lock or shift+Num lock does not do it, attach an external keyboard and she should be able to log in. Then she will need to have the keyboard looked at by a professional. (I probably change 1-2 laptop keyboards every week for customers).

May be one of these...

A. The keyboard or keyboard conenction is fried. That would require a replacement.

B. The keys on laptop keyboards have dual functions. A single key can be for a letter + symbol + number. If the number lock or function (FN) key is locked onto something other than the standard alpha characters.. this would cause what may appear like random entries.

Since the characters in the password field are typically hidden, I suggest experimenting in the username (not hidden) field to verify that your keyboard is inputing the correct characters into the password field.

Sounds like the driver for her keyboard is gone or corrupted. Try shutting down the computer, hooking up an external keyboard to the PS2 connector, turn it back on, and see if that responds to the corresponding letters. If it works, she'll just have to reload the driver for her keyboard, restart her laptop, and see if it works. My most educated guess is that something is corrupted and that's just the first sign. I'd get it checked out. Good luck!
