No. Great question by the way.
I think people pigeonhole themselves and when they find out they are not who they think they are they go into denial and that is not the river.
Right now, the democrat party is splintered and in disarray. They found out who they are and they don't like it, so they are in denial. One group keeps yelling about the base (socialists) and others, the ones who really want to win elections not just push an agenda keep talking about being centrist.
What if you found out that you are not who you think you are? How would you react? Considering that self-awareness is one of the main keys in a successful life, finding yourself to be something you had always disliked, well you can see how that might create some internal discord.
Just for grins, take this test, try to be honest, don't skew it to fit your world view, just take it quickly and honestly. Then sit down and think about how that really fits with what you thought.
There is an adjoining article with it.

Agreed. Most people like to call the ideas they don't like, "un-American." There are people on both sides trying to pull the two together and there are those trying to keep them apart. Unfortunately, those are the ones that usually win. I have never seen this country more split, and it's become more noticeable in the past 3-4 years. This is why I've realized that I'm a Liberal...and proud of it. I'm not saying that there's nothing wrong with being Conservative, but most of the Conservatives I talk to look down on others for being Liberal. Then you have the ignorance come out in people like Lucky J who say that the Liberals defend terrorists. That's complete nonsense. There are things said by both sides about the other that are simply not true, and that is the one biggest lies about the left that I have to complain about. As much as they don't want to believe it, that type of thinking and hate mongering is leading to fascist beliefs. You should vote for who YOU believe is the better candidate. You should vote for what YOU believe is right. I'll never demonize you for what you believe. You sound Libertarian to me...and that works just fine. Just don't let some of the Conservatives know about it...they'll want to deport you.

"...conservative about saving the taxpayer's money and liberal about doing what ever it takes to improve this nations most important asset ... its people."
Practically speaking, these two things are mutually exclusive.
I know, I know, in a perfect world they wouldn't be. But, as you seem to have noticed, it's NOT a perfect world and probably isn't going to be. All you can do is keep working for it.

In my mind...
Liberal
For abortion, gay marriage, pulling outta Iraq
Conservative
Religious, against abortion, against marriage, for the war
Sure there a lot more issues involved but this basically says it for me.
