Some did both. They protested but went anyway. Some protested and left the country (e.g., to Canada).
Some were resigned to the fact that they were going. Some were resigned to the fact that soldiers were going and the war was still going on.
Some protested and watched others go off to war. Some resigned their positions in government as a protest.
I've rambled on enough for there not being a question there.

some americans WENT to the vietnam war, and i could give a dam n less what hippies and pc'ers think. i'm an american and dam proud of it. while they were going to canada,burning flags and protesting, i and others were fighting for their right to do so. have a good day. God bless,
