Since it's already in a setting, these may be hard to do, but you can try them anyway.
1. The transparency test. Get a white piece of paper and put a dot in it with a black marker or pen. Hold the ring upside down flat over the dot. If the dot looks blurry, it's a diamond. If it's solid, then it's fake. However, a very shallow cut diamond can be read through too.
2. The fog test. Hold it up to your mouth and breath heavily on it. A real diamond disperses the heat so quickly that by the time you take it away from your mouth and look at it, it's clear again. A fake stone will stay fogged for a couple of seconds.
The band of the ring should have a stamp on the inside of it indicating karat. 10K, 14K, 18K, etc... This tells you that it is real gold and what karat. The higher the number, the more pure the gold. Gold is a soft metal, so make sure you are careful when wearing it as purer golds wil bend and dent easily.
If the band is real, chances are the stone is too. Most fakes are placed in plated, filled, or silver not white gold. If you can't tell from any of the "tests", call jewelers in your area and ask how much they would charge to look at it, not do an appraisal, but an evaluation. Some will do it for free, but if they charge, $50-75 should be the maximum amount you should be spending.

You are going to have to go to a jeweler and have them remove the stone from the ring. Don't worry - they'll be able to get it back in there!
What they'll probably do, is draw a black dot on a piece of white paper and place the stone on top of it. If it a diamond, you won't be able to recognize the dot. If its cubic zirconium or another gem, the dot will show through and retain its circular shape.
If you're concerned about the value of the ring, you should have it professionally appraised by someone who belongs to a national association of jewelry appraisers. They will be able to perform various tests and would know what characteristics to look for.
Good Luck!!

Take it to a jeweler! And make sure it is one you trust and don't leave the ring there overnight. Some shifty jewelers are taking real diamonds out of rings and replacing them with good fakes.

The best way is to take it to a jeweler. Tell him you don't want an appraisal, just an opinion. Check the band for a 14K or 18K mark to see if it is gold. You will probably need a jeweler's loupe or a magnifying glass.

Real diamonds, when they shine in the light, reflect colors such as purple, blue, green or red... depending on the angle. CZ's don't. But if all else fails, take it to a jeweler

A jeweler will be able to tell you, but may charge for the appaisle, but if you take it to a pawn shop, pretending to try and pawn it. If it's not real they won't take it, if it is, they will make an offer, but you can say well I want more than that to part with it.

Next time your at the mall, pop into a jewlery store and have them take a look. They will be able to tell you right away--what with that "trained eye" and all. If it's fake and a guy gave it to you--Dump him...he's no good for you.
