Why is northern soul called northern because none of the singers sound like they are from Manchester?

I am aware of motown but where is northern soul from or has it got nothing to do with its geographical locaion ?

Yes I have heard of Newcastle but be fair most northen people think that down south we are all Cockneys or Chavs I have a couple of mates from Manchester who call me a bloody southener so on that assumption they must be Northeners ? sorry if I hurt your feelings no intentional insult meant but get your point

It's a funny name and it certainly confused me for a while, since as most of the music is from southern USA. I found out that it actually comes from a record shop in London, who had a section called 'Nor then Soul' dedicated to the records that were being played in Wigan Casino.

I don't know, but I'm so sick of people from the south hearing 'north' then thinking 'manchester'! Er hello...you ever heard of Newcastle? We're definitely more north than Manchester...
