The gothic is an offshoot of the post-punk rock scene. Some of the bands, especially in Europe, of the post-punk era got labelled as being 'gothic,' meaning their music was 'darker' and more styled towards death and whatnot. Once the post-punk scene fell out, goth rock and the goth scene was created out of that.

Well it's all individual, but as for me and a few others i know it's about expression. We don't feel accepted by society so we rebel against the superficiality of fashion and trend. I beleive that if someone judges you on your apperance before getting to know the person inside they are not worth talking to.. and dressed "freaky" is a good way to keep them at a distance. The open-minded people that don't care are usually incredibly insiteful and amazeing people and the best people in my opinion to interact with. There is the artistic element as well. You can experiment more and basicly wear art on your body. A lot of gothic people are very intelligent and artistic, if you get to know them.
Sometimes it's about showing the world that you are in pain, emotionally usually but sometimes physically and mentaly.
It also has to do with musical preferences, you gotta dress hard to rock hard. Hope this was somewhat informative... and some of your ignorance is abolished.

Typically the ideal of goth fashion is simply put, depressed kids dawning black. If you ask around about 90% of the kids are not happy kids, they cite some sort of ailment, either it's their parents who they are rebelling, lack of friends, or in most cases its just a desire to stand out. A lot of them will say " It's about non-conformity" when in fact, they all dress alike which IS conformity, its a uniform now.
The newest hype is the ultra-lame Emo fashion, emo is like goth lite. Basically its pro-bisexual tendencies, though they claim not to be gay , they just like kissing the same sex and looking like thin-waify lite versions of goths with short hair on the sides, and a long flap in the front, mostly stockings on the arms, tight women's pants on males and females, and LOADS of mascara.
This is an ever worse version as its mostly used by "posers" , people who do it for fashion, not to make a statement.
But back to goths, its just a statement. They want to be special. Most of them would never play sports or do something that would be considered preppy. It's like the anti-establishment rule. They want to be the villian to the shiny-bright preppy kids. Which in some way its cool ,but it makes them the same as the preps because they all fall into a clique.
The origins began in the later 80s after the punk movement, bands like Bauhaus,Skinny Puppy, Depeche Mode, and even NIN to some small extent helped shape the look of goths today, the heavy black, metallic look.
In a nutshell, its all a fad, in it time it will pass, like disco, urban rap, punk or the big hair 80s.

I went through my goth phase, and I still love the look to this day. I don't know the origin, but I look at it like a dark beauty. There's something ethereal about bodies draped in black, hair dyed unnatural colors, overly dramatic makeup, various piercings or tattoos and everything associated with a goth style. Like with art, you either love it, hate it or don't get it.

The first real Goth was Alice Cooper, he was the first one to wear all black on a daily basis. I asked a similar question; here's the link to it.
