It depends. Timeshares are good for people that actually have a need/desire for them. They are a way to own (partially) a piece of property that you might not otherwise be able to or want to. Especially good if you want to vacation somewhere regularly. If you're in the right situation, they can be a great asset to you. However, I think that the marketing used to sell them is way too pushy and people get talked into buying them that really don't want them or that don't get their money's worth out of it which has in turn given timeshares a bad reputation as a waste, which for some it can be. If you're seriously thinking about it, do your research and don't make a decision at a place or a time when someone is trying to sell you one.

I own a timeshare with Westgate Resorts in Orlando Florida. They are very expensive and they only reason I purchased one, because they had me lock in on a contract and had to upgrade my timeshare, because they didn't have any of the units that my contract was for. So I got a $40,000 unit for $10,000. I got the contract where I only go every 2 years, so I am not spending a bundle in Orlando every year. I like the rooms, but the downfall is that they try to sell you new development or, in my case, try to get me to purchase where I come every year.
If you purchase one, make sure you get everything in writting, because I got screwed in the long run and had to spend $3,000 more to get what I was promised. **They told me that I would be able to use the timeshare when my daughter was out of school, but when we got the dates, there was not any date that she coud go. I threw one hell of a fit, but it was my word against theirs, even though I had 2 witnesses with me (my husband and my mother). I filed with the BBB and the Attorney Generals Office, but nothing could be done, so I had to spend $3,000 more so we could go whenever we wanted, and now I own the week of 4th of July.
Timeshares are not for everyone and thank goodness mine is paid off, and one of these days I can switch off and go to other resorts that Westgate owns. Also mine has full kitchen, so we fix a lot of meals there, so we aren't spending a bundle eating out. There is a waterpark in development, 13 swiming pools, 2 bars, shopping center, bowling alley and putt-putt golf (in development), and several other things that they have to offer. Did I mention we are 5 minutes from Disney World.

Some probably are scams, you just have to be careful and always read the fine print. My in-laws have one in the Keys and they love it. They sometimes trade it in for different locations, they recently did and went to Mexico and California. See if you have that option, then you don't have to go to the same place every year. If you're not going to use it every year, then it would be a waste of money.

Timeshares are very expensive and not worth the money to me. Just make up your mind and say no, take the free stuff, and leave.

Well, think about it. Do you want to spend an enormous amount of money on something that you can use only once or twice a year and know that other people are using it when you're not?
