My wife and I think that any age under 16/17 is inappropriate. We believe that driving and/or being able to help pay (via a job) are two things that make a child/kid ready for a cell.

Borrowing my cell phone for few phone calls when they are necessary or he/she is at home is ok starting when they can use them correctly. But as to 'owning' one..read the above.

im 15 and i dont have a cell phone but my cousin has had a cell phone since she was 9. if he is spending a lot of time on instant messengers already then maybe he could use a cell phone but the more responsibility he takes for the bills, the better.

Depends, if he is a independent 11 year old. it is ok at that age to get a cellphone. It also depends on situation do he want one just to want one or he need one because he travels by himself if so I would encourage getting him a cell phone.

Disney have a new phone for kids and you can control who they call and what time.

I don't think any one age is the right age. I believe when the child is old enough to handle the responsibility of having a cell phone and not abusing the priviledge of being able to use it.

I wouldn't do it, unless you get one of them phones( i think their called fireflies) that they can only call cetain numbers that you program into the phone. When I got my first cell phone at 15 I was very immature with it, and ran the bill up to like $500. I wouldn't trust it until they can pay their own cell phone bill or at least help.

that's a good age because you want to know where your children are at all times but here's the thing teach responsibility get a pre paid and let the child know that out of your allowance you must keep this phone on and take care of it and if they show you that this was a good move then you step up to a plan

In our house, the rule is if you need a cell phone to

1) get a job
2) keep a job

and the job pays your phone bill, you're old enough for a cellphone.

I think you need to find out why? if it is just to talk to his friends, then no, if it is a safety issue then yes, If you can afford one give him a pay as u go phone. explain that he has only so may minutes to use. That you expect him to contribute to the next card from his pocket, I think it is an excellent way to show your child you trust him and he can return the favour by showing that he can accept responsibilities

My son is 13 and wants one, but I still think he is too young to have his own. I just let him borrow mine if he is out somewhere where he might need to get a hold of someone. Maybe when he is 16.

My youngest daughter is 13 and just got hers at Christmas. I made sure it is a prepaid. She has a paper route, and is responsible for her own minutes. It didn't take her long to learn how to conserve her minutes.
I like it too, because I can keep in touch with her via text messaging.
