industry = money and risk (physical if it's chemistry) and stress
academia = little money but more security and safety

How hard are you willing to work to get ahead?

I have a feeling he would be chemiserable in either field. I'm going to assume that the spelling error is a typo, and that you actually know how to spell your own field.

It really depends on the individual. If he is driven to do research, doesn't mind a little teaching and can take the pressure involved in trying to publish -- then academia is a great life style.

If he wants to work as achemist -- but doesn't care about doing independent research, wants to make more money & doesn't mind going in to an office every day -- then industry is best.

------------EDIT----------------
Contrary to Automation's comment -- there is more risk and more stress in academia (until you get tenure)
