I do agree with you on some level; however, you are only thinking about the young able-bodied people. There are many elderly people who cannot go to work and have lost their savings (their home and their past lives). You have women who have small children with no friends or family here to help them. I think that the able-bodied young people should definantly get a job and support themselves, but for those that are old or very young, kicking them out is not the solution. We must gradually help them help themselves. Things are not so simple--infact, this is a very complex and sore issue for both sides.

That question shows how selfish people STILL are. Where is your compassion for someone who has to sit and watch their house be condemned, all their property and cherished items moldy or ruined, and their life on hold waiting to find out if they can salvage their own property. There are people that try to scam the public all over the place. Most of these people are not scamming, they just want a place to call home. If you think the American Red cross helps, well they give each person $75, usually a walmart card and three days at a cheap motel. Then they kick you out. The United way Organization does not help financially. So ask yourself what exactly does your contribution go to. Find some compassion and go through your stuff and donate it to a place that is helping these people get their lives back on track. As far as the moochers and scammers, well they can't do it forever, they all get caught eventually because of their greed. And no I am not a Katrina survivor, just a person that knows how it is to have to start over with nothing and make it.

Yeah, it's been a year. But our government did more in a day for the tsunami victims than it has for the Katrina victims in a year! Think about it... We can send millions over seas, but maybe a few hundred thousand to ppl here in need! Get a job? Where! Haven't you noticed it's hard to find a good job? The only places hiring pay minimum wage and have no benefits. And the good jobs out there are more likely to be farther away. Get real, wen's the last time you lost everything!?! Does it take less than a year to get over a family member dying because of a drunk driver? NO! Our government was irresponsible in it's actions before and after the hurricane and many lives have been changed and destroyed because of it! Who are you to judge the victims here?!

i think that they are well within their rights to complain...most of those people paid taxes for years to a government that they were led to believe would protect them and help them. (isn't that what our taxes are supposed to do?) they were sorely let down. can you imagine what would happen if there was a "melt down" at a nuclear plant? more terrorist attacks? an attack by another country? we'd just be left out here to die, i think--at least based on how our emergency services reacted during the Katrina crisis.
also, when devastating hurricanes hit florida several years ago, i don't remember all of this hullabaloo----something must have been working RIGHT then!!! maybe having a coke-head for a president wasn't a wise choice, america.

Living in a city where many Katrina evacuees were sent and are still residing I am OUTRAGED! They have come into our cities taken all of ur governmental and state help, consumed our job market and ruined our communities with their vandalism and attitude. We have done nothing but open our homes, hearts, and communities to them and they are still crying about how horrible their lives our. When in fact they are living better than 45% of our own local population is living. I say be grateful that you are alive and you have a roof over your head and food on your table.

Your very un -kind! Where do you suppose they get a job with so many of their resources gone! have you been there? Do you know first hand what these people have gone through? It's very easy for you to say that while you have a roof over your head and a job that still exists. I'm sorry to sound so rude, but how about a little compassion for some people who have lost all their worldly possessions and in some cases family members, pets , JOBS and their life as they knew it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe that it's a problem everytime people get free hand outs from the government...some people find it to be like a whole new career path opening up before them...professional victim.
Most people however just find handouts to be insulting, and rebuild their lives quietly, but these people seldom make for good headlines, and it's all about selling papers, and face time on the tube, ain't it?

Katrine cost and is still costing tax payers millions of dollars. When I read what some of the relief money was used for I was SICKENED! My mother went down there and did some relief work.....she said they had to deal with several people who were abusing the system......yet on the other hand she came back with several touching stories of people who were trying to rebuild their lives trying to stand on their own 2 feet.
Its really a sad situation that never should have happen....but like all things in life we need to learn and MOVE ON!!!!

Unfortunately, those who are still complaining had no life before Katrina and likely never will. I cannot fathom the mindset of those who will not take control of their own lives, but only want the government to support them.

More than 40% who moved to Houston STILL don't have jobs. I understand that it's really awful to have everything taken from you, but get a job and get new stuff!
