The red sox, nor any team, needs to compete with the Yankees payroll, but with the Yankees players. Despite having the highest payroll, the Yankees have been disappointing the last 5 years.

Bottom line....the highest paid players are not necesarrily the best and having the best players does not guarantee a championship. Having the best team and getting hot during those 3 weeks in October is what wins championships.

Well not to mention Payroll isn't really the issue anymore, as mentioned by the others here talking about the players.

The Yankees are trying to manage their money, and picking carefully. They're trying to improve within their talent pool instead of just selling the kids off to get some high-paid jerk who can't toss a ball over a plate to save his life. They're really not spending that much money anymore, at least not in terms of the payroll going up significantly every year.

Every article discussing this phenomenon has mentioned that Cashman is playing it safe this year.

So it's time to get a new whiny argument when your team sucks.

nope The red sox were only talked about team because of the Curse, which they broke and yes they had there little fame for a while but we all knew it was about the White Sox

i am a Yankee fan but that is only for Matsui so its all about the White sox. but seriously nobody can compete with the Yankee payroll, come on just look at the money they spent for Johnny Damon, Or look at how much A-Rod is getting just to f*ck up

There are to many injuries and sicknesses this season i think they are faking now or something like just look at the yankee team alone look at all there injuries its crazy

Stick a fork in them. They spend as much as the Yankees when its a head to head issue. Boston, Mets and the Yanks are the only teams in baseball that pay luxury tax. Do feel bad for Ortiz. He's a gamer.
Manny's a whiner.

If any fan should be PO'd, it should be Cubs fans. They're owned by the Chicago Tribune and have deeper pockets than Steinbrenner. Steinbrenner just has a greater desire to win than ANY owner in baseball and reinvests his money in talent. And Steinbrenner has never made one of his own players the highest paid in baseball. You can blame Rangers owner Tom Hicks for that (currently).
