Zinc and Vitamin C and B complex vitamins are all excellent. I sure do swear by them. I had my brother in town (hadn't even had a cold in MONTHS) and I forgot to take all three. We ran all over and were too busy, I forgot. As soon as he left. I got a sinus infection! I will NEVER forget again! LOL

Vitamin C is a powerful immune system support. 1000 mg/day is the recommmended dosage to prevent colds and common infections.
If you still feel a cold coming on, increase the dosage to 100 mg/ every 2 hours, combined with 2 Echinacea capsules. Take 1 zinc lozenge per day. Continue until bedtime, and if symptoms persist the next morning, continue for one more day. Symptoms should disappear.

Linus Pauling, the only person to win two Nobel Prizes, did extensive research on C and made these recommendations. Personal experience has validated it over and over.

Echinacea is an immune system strengthener but is only effective for short-term treatment. Don't take it daily; it loses its efficacy. Maximum time is 2 weeks. Then discontinue until/unless you feel sick again.

BTW, humans and guinea pigs are the only mammals that don't produce their own Vitamin C.

Eating a healthy diet is the best thing you can do. Fruits and vegetables have lots of immune system builders. Some vitamin supplements have antiviral and antibacterial properties also. An do not forget to drink plenty of water. This helps the natural flora in your body which is there to protect it from unwanted invaders.

Eat healthily (lots of fruit and veg, wholemeal carbs and lean proteins), exercise and take echinacea supplement.

Echinacea (angustifolia or purpurea) increases the numbers of white blood cells which are responsible for immunity. You should be able to buy tincture in your local health food store.

Vitamin C and zinc are also essential for immunity, ensure you get enough in your diet or take supplements.

Best wishes.

Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine - Murray & Pizzorno
has a 17 page long chapter on this subject that just about covers it all.
You might find a copy at local Health Food stores.

I have done this with a functional fruit juice, the only one on the market with medical validation. It is full of phytonutrients, flavenoids and 4 natural polysaccharides, the only fruit on earth that contains that. It was featured in July's issue of Time magazine as the breakthrough superfruit of the century. What it has done for my family and myself is absolutely amazing.

Tranfer Factor plus raise your imune system 437% and the best thing is natural.

Transfer Factor™ Overview

not a vitamin
not a mineral
not a herb
Transfer Factor™ is a vital immune factor brought to us directly from Mother Nature, found in every mammal on earth. Transfer factors are messaging molecules the convey information within an animal's immune system, as well as transferring immune information from one animal or person to another via blood transfusion or breast feeding. This is, in fact, how it got it's name, "transfer factor."

Every mother that breast feeds her infant passes on her immunity, including much of the information her immune system has gained in her lifetime. This process begins with the first milk, called colostrum. There are many things in colostrum, but the most valuable of the "immunity weapons" in colostrum are called transfer factors.

How Does Transfer Factor™ Work?

Simplistically, transfer factor strengthens the immune system. But that could be said about a number of herbal products and other supplements such as echinacea, aloe vera, garlic, colostrum, cordyceps, shiitake mushroom, beta glucans, IP-6, etc. However, an independent study recently showed that Transfer Factor™ and Transfer Factor Plus™ enhance NK cell immune cell function to a greater extent than any of the preceding products (see details below). Unlike most immune supplements that provide the building blocks for proper immune function, transfer factor is "immune intelligence," or immune information and education that focuses the immune system, keeping it on task and effective.

By transferring information from cell to cell and even from individual to individual, transfer factors serve as "teachers" of new immune cells, ensuring a strong immune system capable of withstanding our often harsh environment.* The first time your body responds to a disease or cancer, the response often is relatively mild. But after the initial immune response is over, your immune system keeps memory, and responds much faster and stronger the next time that disease or cancer is encountered. Transfer factors "teach" new cells to react to some disease-causing agents as if it has seen them before--faster and stronger--on the very first encounter.

Transfer factor is not a single entity, but rather a complex mixture containing at least three separate fractions: an "inducer fraction"; an "antigen specific fraction"; and a "suppressor fraction."

the inducer fraction readies the immune system for attack on disease causing invaders, but does not yet tell the immune system what to attack.
the antigen specific fraction identifies critical features of the disease causing agents and stimulates the immune system to produce transfer factors which act specifically against the invading organisms or cells.
the suppressor fraction demobilizes the immune system when the threat has been eliminated. Without this action, our immune systems could injure our own bodies, as occurs with autoimmune diseases and allergies.
The above three fractions work together to create three primary immune enhancing functions:

recognizing and alerting our immune system to the "threat"
conditioning our immune system to respond quickly to "threats"
remembering the threats we encounter to quickly respond in the future
