The smallest particle of an element that still has all of the characteristics has to be an atom. An atom can be broken down further, however, each subatomic particle does not have all the characteristics. These include the protons, neutrons (in nucleus) and the electrons (orbit around nucleus).

Don't get confused with molecules because an element may change once bound with other atoms of a different kind (to form a molecule), or when atoms of the same kind bind to form a molecule.

An atom. Any smaller, and you're talking about protons , neutrons, and electrons, which are interchangable between atoms.
