Can anyone tell me what a clear, slimy discharge could be caused by??? Sorry to be kinda vulgar, but it is a serious question. I have had this issue, not all the time, but occasionally, for quite some time. Does anyone experience this same problem, if so why???

Please excuse me if this sounds patronising, but is it not possible this is just cervical mucus?

Cervical mucus is produced a few days prior to ovulation, it helps conception by protecting sperm from the acidic environment of the vagina and give it a means to reach the egg by providing something to swim through. Ovulation normally occurs from day 12 to day 16 of your cycle, commonly day 14*, and cervical mucus will often be similar to egg white – not all women get this, however it is most common – clear, slimy, stretchy fluid that often will leave circular marks on panties rather than streaks as discharge would, toilet paper will slide across your vulva more easily when you have cervical mucus and cervical mucus does not evaporate from your fingers as much as discharge would.

[ * The start of your menstrual cycle is the first day of true bleeding when menstruating, the average cycle is 28 days with ovulation on day 14, however every woman is different]

Your discharge will also change throughout your cycle, sometimes going from very little through to masses, changes in colour, thickness, and smell, as long as it does not smell bad and is normal for your cycle then there is nothing to worry about.

Just make sure you wash regularly with water alone (vagina is self-cleaning, soaps etc. are harmful to vaginal health), keep yourself dry, try to avoid tight or synthetic clothing, avoid tampons, avoid commercial pads, keep a healthy diet, treat any infections straight away, practice safe sex, etc. to try to keep your vagina as healthy as possible and so help avoid infections.

Yes! I practice Natural Family Planning which is where women chart their basal body temperature and their vaginal discharge to track when they are fertile and infertile. It sounds to me like when you say "clear, slimy discharge" you are describing the discharge women have when they are most fertile during their cycle. I bet you don't mess with your natural cycle by taking any chemical forms of contraception, right? Good for you!!!
When a woman's discharge is clear and it stretches like egg white does, this means she is during her peak of fertility--it lasts anywhere from 4 to 9 days depending on the woman.
Here's the coolest part, though: every woman has between 11 to 16 days after her peak day until she menustrates. Now you can predict more accurately when you will start your period!

What you are describing is cervical fluid or mucous. Every month when you ovulate (when the egg is released from the ovary) your body produces this fluid to facilitate conception. The purpose of this fluid is to give sperm a friendly environment in which to travel--even if you're not sexually active, this will happen.

It is totally normal and healthy to have this type of discharge. You might also notice at other times in your cycle you have discharge or fluid as well, and again, this is normal. It just means your body is working right.

Clear discharge can be totally normal. It could be that you are ovulating. Women typically ovulate around day 10-14 after the start of their last period. It is not unusual to have some discharge for a couple of days around that time.

Clear is okay, it might mean ovulation, however, if you have some odor along with that discharge you might have a small problem. If this problem start to persist and you get even more worried then go see your dr.

A clear discharge can be normal. It is discharge that is cloudy or not clear in anyway that would cause you problems.

I have forgotten the medical reasons for this or what it is called, but I do remember it is normal if it is clear.

Good luck to you.

If it is clear and has no odor, it is natural vaginal discharge. If it has a strong mousy odor, if it turns yellowish green or white cheesy looking you could have an infection. otherwise it is normal. You may wish to wear pantyliners.
