trying to remember which book the following scenario is from, please help!?

Question

i vaguely remember this in a book, and i'm going crazy trying to remember which one!

it's not integral to the story, just a little 'aside' in the book.

every day a man watches from his window as a young boy cycles along the top of a small wall. he tells his friend that the day the young boy falls will be the day that someone teaches him about gravity.

i have no idea at all which book this is in. i know i read it at least 10 years ago, probably longer. i read a lot of books, so there's no way i could go thru every title i've read!

which is Google Books ...no results there...you should call your local library and see if they know...

I am not sure but I think this was from a movie I saw in the 80's, could be wrong, I too read an enormous amount and could have seen it.

The moral was that until someone tells you that you can't do something you believe that you can.

Hmmm, that is tickling a memory in my hindbrain too. Couldn't be a book by Iain Banks could it ? Maybe Crow Road ? I don't have my copy any more to check it out.
