You really should ask the owners of your apartment. They would be the best ones to tell you. I once rented a place that used oil for heating. A full tank would last about half the winter if I remember right. But your usage will depend upon your tank size, apartment size, and how well the apartment is insulated. Normally they also charge you a delivery cost for the oil too, so you don't want to order too little at a time.

All you do is find out how large your tank is, and get the oil truck up there to fill it.

If you live in the North, you will probably have a 150 gallon tank, or even a 500 gallon tank. You will probably have to get it refilled half way through the Winter if you have a reall cold one, or, if you keep the temp down real low, you may make it all the way through the winter...

What it does, is it drips on a pan, or oil ring, and it burns it, thus heating up the plenum and kicking on the blower to the plenum.

Oil is not as efficient as gas, and gas isnt as efficient as propane, which burns a lot hotter than gas or oil.

I wish you well..

Oil heat works in two different ways. It depends upon your heating system. You may have a hot air heating system, or a hot water heating system. In the hot air system, the oil burner heats the air in a plenum and then a fan forces the air out through the system, through duct work and into your home. In a hot water system, the oil burner heats hot water in a tank, and then a pump pushes the water out into your house, through upright radiators, or base board radiators and then back into the hot water tank. The hot water system is better than the heated air system as it is more efficient and uses less fuel.
