bottom line, your going to stall. Your going to make mistakes, and learning how to drive stick for the first time is just potentially dangerous, so try to find an open field, a large empty parking lot, and make sure that its somewhere that has more straight areas then curved space, because it will give you ample time to learn how to actually shift into the different gears. Stadium or a corporate parking lot on a sunday maybe.

For starters, i'd say go to a school.
You're insured, the car is not yours, and there's professional teacher, and mecial services.
I'd learn to drive stick shift in a school, and though the first day was spent just stalling my vehicle, by the third day , i was driving pretty smoothly.
Do not, DO NOT, ever go practicing on your own, and certainly never on public roads. If a friendly officer of the law picks you up, don't know what the penalty is in your state, in my country, no more driving, i forgot is it 3 years, 5 years, or life

There is no "best" way, you just have to practice. One tip that helped me alot, if your vehicle has the emergency brake handle in between the front seats, use it if you have to stop on a hill to keep from rolling back into the car behind you. It works really good for that, just pull the brake and when you feel the clutch starting to grab, slowly release the emergency brake and off you go.

Trial and error. Go to a vacant lot, and test it out. The best thing you can do to assure you get the hang of it:
1) Drive backward - the more you practice this, the better
2) Learn the parallel park - that's the best trick!
Have fun!!!

The way I did it long ago was to buy a junkie/beater, but still driveable car, for cheap. Then drove it until I got the hang of it...burned up the clutch pretty well. Then junked the car

you hop in the car then you go over the gears 12345 then you put your foot on the cluth and your other foot on the gas as your lwetting off the clutch push on the gas once you start moving and your at 3000 rpms put your foot on the clutch and put it in second then let off the clutch and prees the gas then so forth when braking push the clutch in and the brake at the same time then put it in first if you let off the clutch then you stall out good luck
