I think you need to start with flash-cards, After you master your ABC's then you may graduate to hooked on phonics. Although, you may find it difficult at first, Just remember, even a moron can learn how to read!

To answer your question, since Hooked on Phonics is easier, it will fit both your and Paris W's image to try it and expose the fact that you can't get past its 3d Grade level, fit only for reading about pet goats.
