I am stationed overseas and my son is in college in the USA~
My son has a 1995 Explorer 4WD with 170K miles on it. The tranny was shifting improperly, flashing O/D light and was bumping while in gear - long story short, after 4 visits to the shop over a period of 6 months to get the "computer reset", it quit shifting and ended up with a $2300 transmission overhaul and VSS sensor replacement. 3 months after the O/H, the transmission was lurching when coming to a stop at a light. -Tranny under warranty - the lads at the tranny shop "reset the computer" and are telling him that the computer may be failing and it is causing his symptoms, additionally they say this computer could be what caused his tranny to burn up in the first place. My questions are:
- what is this computer
- where is it located
- how much do they cost
- are the tranny lads taking my son (he's bright but not echanically inclined) for a ride?

There is no computer solely for the transmission, but there is a P C M ( a computer that controls everything in the drive train . Nwe they cost approx. $500.00. Used around $100.00 but with used, you don't know if its good or not until after you buy it. Pulling the codes from the computer system should tell if its a bad pcm, idm etc. a pin point test could also be done at the dealer or auto electric shop to be sure before investing in a pcm, good luck

Brother is it worth it? Get your money back. $2300 would have been a good down payment on a new vehicle; one good on fuel consumption and low miles.
It better have a warranty! You paid more than a new transmission would cost.
Sounds like the transmission is slipping. Take it back. If they really knew what they were doing it would be repaired by now.
Yes they are taking your son for a long costly ride.

There is no computer just for the transmission. It has one computer that controls everything. It is probably located behind the kick panel in the right floor board right in front of the door. I would see if I could find one at a junk yard first. It will be cheaper than buying one from ford.
