Well There are extremes in that subject.
Don't be a fashion victim which means don't buy all the most expensive stuff and the latest fashion when it comes out.
But if your current clothes are 50 years old then maybe its a good time to change your wardrobe.
Keep this in mind : YOU DO NOT NEED EXPENSIVE CLOTHES TO LOOK GOOD. Some guys just wear anything with BOSS on it but look bad because it is not their style. Some other guys buy cheaper stuff like American eagle or abercrombie and pull off a really nice look.
Ask your fellows what you look good in and wear colors according to seasons (dark in winter, colors in summer).
Hope that helped !!

Socially acceptable, no. Society makes fashion. The only time it is appropriate to not care about fashion is at the gym.

Ask yourself this: You want to spend the rest of you life being a slave to the tastes and trends of others or do you want to follow your own heart and mind?
Spend enough time concerning yourself with how you think, what you think and what you'll do with this new found knowledge and you'll end up creating your own fashion trend, the trend of individuality.

Yes, fashion is for the sad, the taste deprived. If you think they are the same then you lack even the most basic taste

ya, I don't care about fashion, I do what I want and don't let anyone tell me that I'm not "cool" or w/e because I don't conform! I just like being myself!

I think it is socially acceptable to not care about trends, but people should always try to look clean and well-groomed and wear clothes that fit and look presentable.

yes---I don't 'go with the flow' at all. I wear what is comfortable or whatever I am in the mood for, that day.
People in my hometown tell me I don't look like I'm from here, but from CALIFORNIA OR SOMEWHERE.
GO FIGURE!!
