Is this social improvement?

It's funny to read things like: "oh yes they have experience, age is not a barrier"
bullshit!
If you had a propper social system these people would enjoy a normal retirement.
But you don't so it's walk or die...

It's not only in England, I'm in Ireland and we have people of that age in the service industry too. I really don't think it's social improvement mroe like a decline. Why the hell should someone who's 70 have to work, they should be looked after and by us and the state end of!

No it's not "social improvement" it's "freedom of choice in a free market economy". Active mature people live longer, healthier lives than their counterparts who sit around watching TV all day.

I suggest you will find a proportion of people into their 70's and 80's are happily working in every counry of the E.U and indeed, the whole World.

And if you think you know the answer, why exactly are you asking the question, Plum?

Better than America. Most 70 year olds here are working at Wal-mart trying to make a living since their social security checks are pitiful and medical care is expensive.

Unfortunately in England our old folk have to work to keep all the foreign people who come here to live on the social, plus its not only cafes they work at that age we have them in supermarkets to good old tony Blair if it was up to you we would have too work till we were a 100. Its all through Europeans coming into England because we are to soft

Uh, they have that just about everywhere. Somepeople actually want to keep working and some people have to but this isn't specific to England, even in Europe.

My fiance nan is 76 and helps out at her deaf club twice a week, attends church and helps out there, and does the housework in her big house and looks after her grandchildren - all this and she dances!!

Age is no barrier!!

Lots of old people prefer to work well into their retirement and some even volunteer. i.e WRVS

gotta keep the old dears on there toes, we got them in Scotland too so its NOT only in england. and they make a nice sandwich and a coffee
