Historical monuments and buildings give us a physical, tangible connection to our past.

For example, if you go to Rome, you can see parts of the Imperial Forums (built from 46 AD), Roman Colosseum (80 AD), Trajan's Column (113 AD), the Baths of Diocletian (306), Basilica of St. John Lateran (324, rebuilt several times), the Column of Phocas (608), the Aurelian Walls and the towers of Rome, St. Peter's Basilica (1626), as well as modern architecture.

Even in America, places like Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the Alamo in San Antonio, the Empire State Building in New York, or the Gettysburg battleground in PA, hold a special place to Americans. Just by being in proximity to those places, you feel a connection to the past that goes beyond what you could ever feel from a textbook.

History isn't just about dead men and dates that we read in old books.
... It's tangible, something the average person can touch and feel.

Good examples include standing in a revolutionary/civil war battlefield, visiting a museum or a historic homesite.

As development increases, old historic structures get torn down and at times, all that remains is a plaque or monument.

Those monuments are to remind us of what events occurred there many years ago.

Some of those monuments are from the past, Lincoln freed the slaves, you learn about this and maybe some day your children will and you can take them to Washington to see it. the Monument at arlington cemetery, the wall of names of people that lost there life for us. these just can't go away they must be preserved for our children and there children to see and understand what happen years ago. and to make sure it never happens again. Monuments: they are there for us to remember just like the jewish people with the holocaust, they never forget and they keep that memory and teach there children and there children, and so we have a lot to thank these people who have been so honored by a momument that we can learn from what they did and understand where they came from.they are there for us to visit or ask,.Why were they important? and learn.
