This is gona make me sound stupid but...When something comes on t.v. at 10/9c I watch it at 9 because Im in central time zone. So, for other people it comes on at 10. But we're both watching it at the same time. Does everything happen an hour later in that time zone. Like school for instance, here elemenary starts at 7:30. I think it would be weird to be in another time zone because my shows would feel like they were coming on late.

well, most things dont happen at the same time in different zones.

i.e. - massachusetts kids go to school a few hours before california kids. this has more to do with when the sun is out, so they dont care what's happening at the other side of the country. so on the east the kids go at 7 am, and the west coast kids are still sleeping. then a few hours later, when its 7 over there, they go to school too.

some television broadcasters will play things and do the 10/9c thing, because those hours tend to have a lot of ppl home from work and paying attn to the tv. but, for an east coast program to go on at 8 pm and play at 5 pm on the west coast doesnt make sense, a lot of ppl would miss it because they're not home from work yet. so the tv execs try to play things at different times to make sure they get as many ppl watching as possible.

When a show specifically states a time (10/9c), then that's when it comes on. Ten in eastern time zones and nine in central. Now, that's not to say that the show doesn't come on at seven on the west coast. I have friends and family on both coasts and I know that some programs come on at completely different times all together because there are different networks. For example, Charmed (WB show) used to come on here in Texas at 7:00p on Sunday, but on the east coast (in Virginia), the show came on at like 1 or 2 am on Friday (NBC). So it really just depends on the networks, and whether it's specifically stated.

Also, schools start at roughly around the same time all over the US. Kids that go to school at 7:30 on the east coast are in school an hour earlier than those here in Texas (central). And for the kids going to school at 7:30 here Texas it sucks to know that the kids on the west coast are still tucked in bed because it's only 5:30 on the west.

Hope all this helps.

It can be confusing. There are 4 time zones in the US. Eastern and Central are coordinated for television programming. But Eastern is an hour earlier. So when it's 8:00 and the kids in the eastern time zone are going to school, your kids are still at home eating breakfast at 7:00.

The Mountain and Pacific time zones would be behind you in central. They are also coordinated to the same TV scheduling, but when it's 8:00 in Eastern, and it's 7:00 in central, it would be 6:00 in mountain and 5:00 in Pacific. So when you go to school at 8:00, the kid in Colorado is having his breakfast and the kid in California is still asleep.

One more thing: When you watch your TV show at 10/9C, the folks in Mountain and Pacific won't be getting it for another hour later. That's why we have to be careful with talking about results of reality shows on the net in that hour window, because we could spoil it for the people in Mountain and Pacific who haven't seen it yet.

It's all determined by Sunrise. It rises in the Eastern time zone before it rises in the Central time zone and rises later in the Mountain Time zone, and finally in the Pacific time zone.

Each zone is an hour difference.
When a program broadcasts from NY, ET, at 8:00, the time is 7:00 in CT, 6:00 Mountain time, 5:00 Pacific time.

The program is reaching those zones "simultaneously" but earlier than the Eastern Time zone.
If you lived in a different time zone, it would be as normal as another after a day or two.

Yes, school starts at a different "time" than the others and dismisses "later" compared to NY, ET. When it is dark in NY, it is still light in California. When it is Dawn in NY, it's still middle of the night in California.

If you are in the Central time zone and I am in the Eastern and school starts at 7:30 for both of us, that is 6:30 my time, so you are in school one hour before I get there

No, it's just there are more people on the eastern time zone, so they want to appeal to there majority audience; New York City, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, and many other large cities are all in the Eastern Time Zone.

There just arn't that many people in central time zone. Biggest city is Chicago and that's about it for cities with population over 1 million in that area. So there arn't alot of Television network buildings in the central time zone so they just program to go along with the Eastern Time Zone were most of the Network programming headquarters are located.

As for school, it really depends. All school districts seem to have different timing for when school start, although the average is around 8:00 > 8:30 on the east coast.

In the Southern states school usually starts around 7:00 AM, in the midwest (central time zone) it usually starts around 7:00 or 7:30. The west coast is the same as the east coast.

When the average school day begins and ends has to do with the location of the school geographically. Factors are weather, particularly the temperture.

Actually everything except broadcast TV is happening about an hour earlier in Eastern Time than in Central Time. Its just that when they broadcast it from ET, folks in CT who receive it are an hour behind. The radio waves can't slow down so as to arrive an hour later.

In terms of the sensation, you get used to local times and stuff. I've lived in several zones, including Japan. You get used to new times.

Now for the preachy part. Watch less TV, go outside and watch the sunset. You won't care about zones, at least not those zones.

Now for the teachy part. Who invented time zones?

LOL

Time zones are funny, because you have to remember where people are in the world. In some places, it's tomorrow while it's still today here!

Any way, when you watch your TV show at 9c, I am watching it at 10 EST. But we are watching it at the same time!

School starts at 7:30 here, but it's only 6:30 at your house.

Having lived on the east coast ET, and in the midwest CT, I can say it depends. Having primetime in the east made you stay up later since it was 8-11 instead of 7-10 in the CT.

I liked moving to CT because then I could see all of primetime by 10p without having to stay up too late. Plus, it made watchin late night a little easier.

School seems to be the same time in both time zones as does most work. there are a few things that are later on the east coast, but not many. So in general, your body just adjusts, or you lose the late night crowd!

Hope it helps unravel the mystery!

so are you asking of school starts at 8:30 instead of 7:30? Your watching the show at the same time because they are an hour ahead. I guess i don't completely understand but if i have it right. In Michigan for instance news come on at 11:00. Is this what your asking?
