go completely through and fall on the floor? Plan to be gone a couple of months and have a relative that will come into my house every two weeks, or so, to pick up all mail that has collected on the floor. Any thoughts?

One of the first things you need to do is check with your postal service to determine if this is legal for your area. The new postal regulations may not allow it. From the USPS site:

"Some states have enacted laws that are more stringent and specific about the type of mailbox that may be used, the post or support that must be used to mount the mailbox, and the location of the delivery equipment. Regulations and recommendations published in this notice might not reflect appropriate requirements for your area. When providing guidance to the general public concerning mailbox placement and replacement, advise them not only of Postal Service regulations but also of any mailbox regulations that you know have been enacted by state or local authorities"

The easiest thing to do would be to have your mail temporarily forwarded to your relative. You can easily do this on-line, at the USPS web site (see the 2nd link)! They require only 24 hour notice (I believe -- I know that is all they need for stopping mail -- I do it all the time!), and will then start resending to you either at a preset date, if you request, or when you notify them to at a later date. Also, if I am not mistaken, this will allow only the first class mail and subscribed magazines to be forwarded, instead of ALL the junk mail, as well.

Hope this information helps!

I saw one at Home Depot or Lowes. Why would you want someone to collect something that is already in your house?
just curious. Ask your mailman if he will do this. Most don't. There are cards to fill out and the Post Office will hold your mail for you and deliver it when you tell them to. That would be the easiest. And you can do all of this on line I think. Although it might require a signature so check and be sure. m

Home Depot, Lowes, Home Decorators catalog all carry the type of mail box you desire. I got mine at Lowes because it was the easiest to install. You can find them on the aisle with the house numbers and door hardware sets. I also liked the security features on the one from Lowes. You cannot open the flap and look inside the house, nor can you reach your hand inside to reach mail that has been slipped to the slot and fallen to the floor.
