There is no easy way. There will be guilt and pain for both parties when departing no matter how dead end. the best is a Dear John/Jane letter and just vanish for awhile. Change your mobile number and DON'T call his/her mobile number no matter how tempting or desperate.

Tell him/her that things aren't what they once were and although you deeply care for them that's it unfair to be in a relationship that your fully commited to. Say that when it was good it was great but things just don't look like they're going anywhere. Offer your friendship, maybe a hug and go from there. Good luck buddy!
