Bob Dylan considers himself to be foremost, a poet so he chose the name Dylan after Dylan Thomas. Anyway, who would take someone called Zimmerman seriously.

Dylan Thomas, for sure.
In fact, it was part of the hype and buzz (forgive the pun) when Bob Dylan began hitting it big. In an odd way, it legitimatized what he was casting himself as.
He had to separate himself from the "beatnik poet" that was so popular in the 50's and on Dobie Gillis (hehe).
He needed to set himself apart from easy classification, "oh, he's just a beatnik" or "oh, he's just a folk singer". So, he became the "poet for our generation" and protest singer and a rocker.
Connecting himself to a legit poet like Dylan Thomas added shadings and mystery to his character. Kinda like "implied depth".

A bit obvious I'm afraid - after Dylan Thomas. (Let's see how many people answer after Dylan from the Magic Roundabout)
