I've yet to see a China man or woman on a mountain bike. Do these
old rusty bikes remind them of their homeland?

Did you ever notice that most of them are not really fat? The only ones who ride around on those wrecks are the new immigrants. The rest of the Chinese Americans are just like the rest of us, after a generation or two. Probably the new immigrants are poor and are trying to save money. Or perhaps they want a bike that won't break their budget if it is stolen.
Did you ever notice that the Mexicans and Guatemalans do ride around on nice bikes? I wish they would put some lights and reflectors on them at night, so people won't run over them in the dark. We live on a rural road and it worries me sometimes.

Okay your question rates one of the stupidest. First of all why are you paying so much attention to these people. Did you ever think that maybe they are the smartest. They get to where they need to and it doesn't cost them a arm and a leg to do it.Maybe they have to use a bike not for recreation but for there livelihood. Not everyone is born with a silver spoon in their mouth.

I think Americans born in this country have a lot to learn from immigrants. We are such label whores. We spend an extra $10 for a t-shirt because someone else's name is on it. It's just a t-shirt! Save the $10. Pay off your credit cards! Stop trying to impress people who really don't give a damned about you!

The same reason some people might like to take a ride in their old 1983 Honda. One of the main mides of transportations in China is the bicycle. So, they may feel it nice to ride in their "good ole' faithful" bicycle as many may feel it nice to ride in their "good ole' faithful" car that has well over 100,000 mileage.

I like rusty old cars and I'm caucasion. Consumerism is the scrounge of the earth. You buy the new bike, I'll buy the cheap bike

The Indians (from India) have cornered the bicycle market.

Ancient Chinese Emperor Hui (259-306) of Jin Dynasty, the notoriously silly and impotent emperor once saw his people having nothing to eat and said, "Why don't they eat meat-congee?". It was his thinking that meat-congee needed less rice to cook and their limited rice supplies could last longer.

Unaware of the dire situation of his people (that they did not have rice at all, let alone meat), the silly emperor left us an idiomatic remark "Why don't they eat meat-congee?" which is widely used today by Chinese in referring to well-off people who keep wondering why poor people cannot afford a Mercedes, a trip around the world, weekly spa at Malibu ....etc

I think I have answered your question.

Live and let live.

Don't see anything wrong with it, and if it was safe I would do the same.
