Base coat Base coat BASE COAT!! Buy a good quailty base coat so the colour has something to adhere to. I find my nail polish lasts twice as long because it doesnt flake off when i use a good base coat.

An application of top coat every 2-3 days for fingernails and 4-5 for toes works wonders too. Try Sally Hansens Insta-Dry (it comes in a red bottle). It drys in literally 20 seconds and lasts for days and days. I love it!!

Use oils and creams to take care of your hands, yes - but these need to be washed off with a nail brush and a little detergent before you put on any polish, to provide a clean surface for the polish to attach itself to. Put on 2 coats of base coat right up to the tips and over the edge, to seal it. Use a generous amount of colour - dollop it on! Do at least 1-2 brush strokes of colour on each nail, for each coat. Allow to dry thoroughly and then apply another layer of colour in the same way. Once this is dry, use a top coat.

To keep them from chipping:

You can avoid chipping by making sure the nail is completely free of oils before applying your base coat. A top coat is also essential to give your manicure a longer life. Apply a second coat the next day, and then every second day after on your fingernails, and every week on your toenails.

Hope that helps.

Spend good money on a top coat. Cheat nail polish chip too easily but if you get an expensive top coat you can wear cheap nail polish underneath and get the same protection.

Use good nail polish, like OPI.

ridge filler base coat, 2 layers of polish and a clear top coat.

First try buying higher quality nail polish, if you don't want to do that, apply a base coat, then the color, then a top coat.

Use a basecoat under the color. Use really good clear on top. Maybe get it from a beauty supply store instead of a drug-store. And use a couple coats of the clear.

base coat and top coat, plenty of time to dry, and keeping your hands lotioned. maybe even add or skip layers of polish because sometimes too much or too little can be bad.
