I had just started the car (I had to press the accelerator over the past month so it wouldn't die, sometimes even at trafic lights, basically the rpms would idle iratically -usually underreving the engine), anyhow, at about 200 yards from my house I heard a 'thump' coming from the engine after which the engine kept running but all the gears from Park to Low have no effect on the car -- I gotta say that now the shifter works/slides quite easily!

Anybody?

Oh this happened just before a traffic light. I usually put the car in neutral so it wouldn't underrev and turn off- yes, its an automatic - now that i think about it it seems that it's stuck in neutral since even Park wont hold

Do the additional detail make it any more clear?

Check the linkage (from shifter to transmission), then check the drive shaft (rear wheel drive) or half axles (front wheel drive)

If this is all okay, it is probably the transmission.

Sounds like a broken shifter cable or the bolts mounting the shifter bracket at the transmission is loose or fell off..

Sounds like the shifter has come disconnected somewhere. It could even be on the inside of the transmission.

The transmission was the "thump" you heard. It thumped out. The gears are gone. Sorry!
