I have gas central heating, from a combi boiler. In summer I only use the central heating when required, but I leave the hot water switch on all day. Is this more cost effective that just switching on the hot water when I require it? Energy prices going through the damn roof!!!

I see the confusion. I didn't realize at first that a combi boiler is the same thing as a tankless water heater. Your water heater only heats the water as you use it. So no, don't turn it off. You won't save a penny.

I think you are better off just letting it run all day because I think it would be more expensive to have to re heat the water every time you want to use it. At least if it is running all the time It is running every once in a while to maintain the water temperature. Your best bet: Reduce the temperature. Go to the minimum temperature say 100 degrees from 120 degrees.

with a combi boiler it only heats it as you use it so though the switch is on it is not heating the water as you have no storage tank.

errr, your combi boiler doesn't store hot water so its always off unless you turn the hot tap on and drop the pressure.

unless its not a combi boiler.

Can you add more detaisl to the question, ta.

See, i was told by a plumber or heating guy or something, that it doesnt make any difference cos if you only turn it on when you need it, the energy it uses in heating up from scratch is the same as if it was on all day. im not sure. bloody energy companies! grr

It all depends on your circumstances. If you use the hot water a lot, keep it on all the time but if you just use it in the morning and evening then turn it on when you need it.

I keep mine on all the time because I am too lazy!

Wouldn't it be inconvenient to only turn it on when you need it? Then you have to wait for the water to heat up every time.

If you are using an eclectic water heater then it is cheaper o keep it on all day. Hot or warm water is quicker and cheaper o heat up than water hat has been left to go cold.

only switch it on when you need it or if it has a timer set to to come on about a half an hour before you need it.
It also has effects on the environment if you leave it switched on all day
