Pentium D is def. the way to go
make sure the machine says its windows vista capable
its gotta have atleast 1gb memory, and 512mb of video memory
why a D?
its got a blazing fast FSB, much higher than a P4 even with hyperthreading
and it makes the system believe that it has two CPU, when in reality its got just one CPU with two core, and two seperate caches sitting on the CPU compared to the jsut 1 in a P4
hope this helps

It depends on your budget, but generally I'd recommend the Pentium D or the brand new Core 2 Duo.

a pentium D has 2 cores vs the one in a P4. even at a slower clock speed the PD is faster then the P4.

the PD has a bigger FSB and cache.

plus 2 cores is like a 2 lane hiway vs the one lane in the P4 which has a single lane.
