So I have a friend who is on medicaid. Actually it is his infant daughter who is. He works 60hr. weeks to support his family and cannot afford insurance. His wife stays home with the baby. Recently his In-laws and his wife have been pushing him to take the baby off of medicaid and just pay the bills himself. They feel that it is wrong to be on medicaid. Now some backgroung. they come from upper-middle whites. they are a poor young couple that can barely make their mortgage (hence the 60hr. weeks) this guy feels that if anything he deserves some help from the government. He works hard, is a good citizen, pays taxes. Should he accept help from medicaid or not?

Medicaid is a safety net. What would happen if the unthinkable happened and their daughter developed leukemia. The medical bills can rise up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. And without insurance, the girl would probably receive sub-standard care. Dropping medicaid is tantamount to child neglect. This should not be about stand-on-your-own-feet pride. This should be about taking the best care of his daughter he can.

And why exactly is it he or his wife cannot get a job that carries insurance? I'm certain there's a legitimate reason, and it may reflect the region of the country where you guys live, but the companies have some responsibility, too, not just him alone.

Medicaid is for those whose income fall within a certain range of the US poverty level. Obviously he has applied and been accepted into the program. Therefore he should accept this medical insurance. Medicaid is medical insurance and if he does not have any other form of medical insurance he should (if accepted) take it. The Medicaid program differs by State and overall, Medicaid is better program than Medicare. One of the reasons why the Medicare Part D plan received alot of criticism was because those on Medicaid who had to switch to Part D, are not receiving half the drugs that Medicaid allowed. Medicaid is perfectly good program to participate in. His tax dollars are going towards the program so he should take advantage of it!

I see no longer something incorrect with hardworking, tax paying voters being on medicaid, if purely for a rapid time to help. that's what Medicaid and different courses are there for. i won't be able to stand the undeniable fact that there has been such numerous Non-voters that have been authorized for information like Medicaid, nutrients Stamps and kin Housing. i think of that those issues might desire to be offered by ability of our government for US voters because of the fact the fee of residing is so severe and the ordinary public are working such as you reported 60+ hours each week and maximum for mimium wadge and it sucks.

absolutely! it is there to help families just like his, especially when there is a dedicated two-parent family that is working hard to make ends meet.

why should they struggle even more, when this is what the system is there to help? heaven forbid, some medical emergency should arise and they not have insurance at all, and the bills put them under for life by ruining their credit!

and gee, sean, god help you if you ever need help. hope you have one hell of a retirement plan and won't need medicare~ that's government help, too. and how dare you suggest they get a divorce! what makes you think that the dad didn't make a conscious decision to have his wife home to take care of their child? why pay someone else to raise the child when the mother is there? that's exactly what the child needs... a broken family unit and someone else raising him/her. there are never social ramifications of that! (that is sarcasm, moron)

hardworking families should get the help that is available. screw the people that are not helping and only criticizing what they are doing. are they willing to financially help them to get private insurance?

yes he should. that is why the system is there. better that he get the help with the bills and be able to provide other things for the baby.
he should realize that he is grown and only needs to take parents advice if he wants too. it is none of their business how he runs his finances.
They apparently have a "image problem with it"
i would ask how they would feel if something catastrophic happened and they had no way to pay the bills... what would happen then.

Medicaid is good, but it is welfare. In the above scenario how come the wife isnt working 60 hours too?If she could the 200.00 per month premium for 80/20 insurance would be attainable.Of course lazy people, especially women have wonderfull excuses for not being able to labor.I would suggest the above couple get a divorce so he can have a life and let his wife feel what a 40hr work week is all about. With joint custody he probably could swing child support and the premium and still have more money in his pocket than he has in a long time.

If he qualifies and is working, he should accept it.

That is what it is for.

Peace!
