Our family seems fine, but I notice black spots which I take to be mold on the part of the unit that blows out the cold air (not the filter, which is clean). Is there a safe disinfectant that can be sprayed inside the unit?

Any household disinfectant safe for surfaces can be used. A frequent spraying of Lysol on the air filter, discharge vent, and onto the coil behind the air filter will stop the mold, and also make the air smell nice.

Don't use paper towels on the coil itself - the pressure of your hand can bend the fins. The fins are also sharp and will cut lint off the paper towel which will dirty the coil. For dirty coils, any strong household cleaner and a wire brush are the best cleaning tools.

My idea is to put bleach in a spray bottle and mist the air vents with bleach and then wipe them with a soft rag. Lysol will also help keep the mold off.

I would get something like 409 or mean green and spray on there and wipe off good with a paper towel.
