I do believe their purpose is to stop the westernization of the middle east. Islamic fundamentalists are against western culture. I don't know that they reason in terms of individual government types such as democracy, but rather in the broader scope of what western culture represents. In order for radical Islam to thrive the masses must be oppressed, women must be in their place, and all people must subscribe to their religious tenets. Western societies give women an equal voice, and allow freedom of religion.

For Al Qaeeda sponsored jihadists Iraq has become a rallying cry, a training ground and a place to gain combat experience. They are not really interested in democracy in any way, shape or form. They see Iraq as a stepping stone towards the establishment of the Caliphate and the expulsion of "Crusaders" from Islam's holy places in Saudi Arabia.
