Likely you have a plant or possibly and old glass/cup with liquid in it somewhere nearby where a fly has laid its eggs, they have spawned into larvae so small you can't see them.

Then when conditions are right/they are ready they have mutated to their flying stage. If they are shortlived flies they may all do this within a very small time frame.

I have had the same problem, i tracked it to new compost i had put into a houseplant pot.

This is of course only if they were small flies, if they were bluebottle size ones i would suggest look out the window and see if there is a source for them below, old bin or suchlike.

perhaps you have a cat and he / she brought a bird into the house and it is dead, under or behind furniture where you can not see it? One fly will lay many eggs in the carcass of a dead bird that in turn hatch and feed on the bird. When mature they turn into flies and you experience an explosion of flies with in minutes.
This could also come from a dead mouse - same thing.

If you can't find anything rotten in there, even under the floor boards, hang a cross and keep an eye on it. Don't mean to freak you out, but better to be safe than sorry. If you don't believe, I'd like to think that is some protection for you. These things feed on your negative emotions.

Answer 1 is teliing the truth. Flies come from eggs that were hatched on some rotted food.

Are you sure they were flies? Swarming termites do that - when they are in the stage with wings they will swarm in through a small opening very suddenly as you described. It happened to me once - you were nice to let them back out. I introduced mine to the vacuum hose.
They will probably not come back in and are harmless at that stage. Later, you don't want them near your house.

Could you have a dead mouse in the house? It would have to have been something dead or meat - based to attract the flies, I'm afraid.

I've heard that if gas is leaking from the pipes it attracts flies. Check your pipes carefully and quickly.

You might want to look for some rotton food - especially meat. Make sure the kids didn't leave any food lying around.

you will probably find some half eaten bit of food lost by a child under a seat cover, maggots will have been hatching.
