This depends upon the purpose you intend for use of the colors.
If you look at a color wheel, any colors which are directly opposite from each other are complementary. They go quite well together, however make for high contrast, which is not always a good choice for fashion. Red and green, for example, are complementary, but if you wear red shirt with green pants, you'd look like a christmas tree.
Complementary colors are good for accesorizing.
Different shades of the same color are can often make for striking visual imagery.
Again, it really depends what you're intending to use the colors for. Certain combinations may look good in a living room, but dreadful as a fashion statement.

You need to look at a color wheel
Here are a couple of links:
http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/floriculture/container-garden/lesson/colorwheel.html
http://www.sanford-artedventures.com/study/g_color_wheel.html
Basically, color opposite each other work well together ....example:
red goes well with green.
Another way to figure out a good color conbination is to hold up the large square of a color against a white surface and stare at it for a minute then without moving your eyes, quickly remove the square of paper. The color you briefly see is the best contrasting color for your original.
Finally, here's a link to a page where you can mix colors and see what they'll look like - it's fun!

I think that blues and greens go together great and complement each other. Oranges, pinks, and reds go great together as well.

Sweet dreams is correct, but this also applies to white also. I usually like wearing white and black together. That is my favorite color combo. Or tan and black.
