Why would they NOT have a word for a swan? Did you think they went around saying "Le grand oiseau aquatique blanc au cou long qui n'est pas une oie"? *

Un cygne, which is of course where the English cygnet (baby swan) comes from.

swan = cygne in french according to http://www.freetranslation.com/ but i dont know how reliable that is!!!
