I live in Central Indiana and my son found this huge caterpillar yesterday. It's 5 inches long and an inch thick, and it's mainly dark brown in color. It has a light pink face and strange similar colored back end. It also has some hair, but not really thick, and also four orange spines (might sting) towards the face and one in the middle towards the back. We really want to keep him and see what he turns into but I can't find out what he is. Serious answers only please. Thanks!

Sounds like an imperial moth, I've attached two websites below, the first is a caterpillar identification site. The second has a picture of the adult and the caterpillar.

Have fun!

It sounds like it may be some type of Hornworm or other "Giant Caterpillar" (2nd link below for descriptions). Be aware that some caterpillars will go through a color shift as they begin to get ready to pupate, so that what is described as a normal color may not be the same as yours. Also, see the first link -- it is a thread where someone had a large caterpillar that had changed color due to overheating, but it still was OK. You didn't mention any spots on the side, but I include one last link to a really fat brown caterpillar that I thought was just great!! Even if it is not yours, you should just look at it for the fun of it! Hope you have luck with yours and that it turns into something cool -- I just LOVE butterflies and moths.

regularly the horned caterpillars are sphinx/hawk moth caterpillars. and not making use of a photograph, region, and plant you stumbled on it on i will't get lots nearer with surety (in spite of the shown fact that my wager is catalpa hawkmoth); yet listed below are 2 web pages with a lot of photos.
