The Sunset Western Garden Book is very good for the western United States of America. Excellent plant descriptions. Detailed climate maps. The care and pest management recommendations often match the best advise from University cooperative extension programs and Master Gardeners.

I found that books by Rodale press were very helpful. Another good onw is "The Wise Garden Encyclopedia".

When I started collecting gardening books (I have a garden book fetish LOL) I would find a lot of the old ones at rummage sales, thrift stores and library sales. Some of the information from the 20's - 50's is very good...tried and true gardening information that I think many people forget about today.

Besides the books, you can check out some online gardening forums. They're very helpful and you'll get answers to your questions quickly.
