The clothes are getting holes in them before they're even put away i.e. when they are in a pile awaiting ironing. Not sure if it's enough to put a cedar block or something on top of them.

Moth balls

There are 2 things that strike me about this. One is when do the holes appear and where? Two are all the clothes cotton & are your other fabrics being affected. E.g. curtains and bedding?
Have seen the Moths.
I have a Moth problem but not so much holes appearing as Moths - little baby ones. I use Cedar Blocks. I have been trying to get one of those Phermone traps but haven't found anywhere close that sell them.

The other point is - Are you sure that it is not damage caused by the washing/ spinning of the clothes.
The best thing to do is keep a record of the holes to try and work out the exact cause. Another thing to try is bagging up you clothes to make it less easy for the Moths. I would not want to smell of Moth Balls. Would You ??

If you have clothes moths you will see them. They are golden in colour, small (quarter of an inch in size) and they aren't very good flyers, this makes it easier to catch and squish them. Kill any you see.

The adults lay eggs on your clothes which then hatch. The larvae then eat the clothes which is where the holes come from. The eggs are tiny you won't see them on your clothes, but shaking your clothes is a good way of shaking the eggs loose.

It isn't easy to get rid of clothes moths, but there are a few things you can do. They do not like strong smells, so put moth balls in with your clothes. Nicer smelling alternatives are lavender, and cedar wood. Clothes moths don't like man-made fibres, they prefer natural fibres, preferably with some human sweat to make it taste better! If you are getting holes in garments that are made from man-made fibres it could be your washing machine.

Check your wardrobes and drawers often, especially those clothes that sit at the bottom and are rarely worn. If there is a favourite garment that has become a banquet for the moths, wrap it in cellophane and put it in the deep freeze for three months. This should kill the eggs, the only other alternative is to throw it away.

General cleanliness helps, but if they are in your carpet then it would be best to contact a pest control specialist. Hope this helps.

Wow, I would have suggested Bay leaves or mint sachets for stored clothes ( because I hate the smell of moth balls) but while waiting to be ironed is a diff rent matter.!@#
Are you sure there is not some chemical coming in contact with the clothes that is causing them to deteriorate?

As stinky as they are, moth balls are available to place in closets. Just another tip, if you want to keep any snakes from hanging around your yard or a skunk, for example, moth balls will keep those critters away. If you don't think it is moths, sometimes roaches eat your clothing or mice. Pretty yuky but true.

First send clothes to cleaners. or if done at home hang them to dry in sunshine. Then if packing away use cedar chips or blocks I hate mothballs you can never completely get rid of the smell. If you are hanging them in closets use hanging cedar blocks etc.

Are you sure there is nothing caught in your washing machine which is catching your clothes?
Check the drum and round the rubber seal.
(In any case It is not the moths that eat holes in clothes, it`s the caterpillars.)
