Since you have an iPod I'm guessing you use iTunes with it? If not, it's a free download and is the best way to manage music on your iPod. It also lets you rip music from CDs into MP3 format. (No, CD files are not in WAV format.. it's a completely different file format all together.) The process of converting the CD format files is called "ripping". You choose the output format and rip the files all in once step, so you don't have to copy from the CD and then convert them to MP3. Click the link below for a more step-by-step guide on using iTunes to rip your songs.

Use your Windows Media Player.
Once you put the CD in, open up Windows Media Player (if it doesn't open up automatically). Go to the Tab called RIP. Make sure all of the songs are checked, then hit the Rip Music button located near the top right corner. Once the process is finished, you will have to rename the songs if the windows did not automatically do it ( some of the newer CD's have that information embedded in them). Now your songs are in MP3 format on your PC.

Hey the best program for that is Exact Audio Copy, it will rip your CDs into MP3s, using a variable bit rate, which makes your MP3s sound more like a CD, however, you must also download that LAME engine, just google it. That is a music decoder, it goes into your Windows32 Sys. If you need help finding it, just let me know and I could send you the file. Hope that helps.

Your ultimate goal appears to be to get your CDs on your iPod. Using iTunes is the best choice. You will want to adjust the advanced options to rip the CD properly. Go to Advanced >> Importing >> Import Using MP3 Encoder.
